Food for thought as new season looms
League in good shape despite the changes
As things stand 124 teams will operate in the League next season, but considering those that have come and gone in the past 20 years it is still a very healthy number and one we as a League should be proud of. We finished this past season with 122 teams, so all things being equal we are up two.
Twenty years ago in 1999 the League sported 129 teams. Ten years on in 2009 the League had grown to 141 teams, which was pretty much a pinnacle, but of course that has now been reduced as many teams have moved on into higher pastures. Most of the 16 team difference can be accounted for by former clubs now members of or moving into the SW Peninsular League, and the new Step 7 Devon League. We have to wish them well, but considering the changes, it is fair to say our League still has a very healthy membership. New clubs are always springing up, and that is what we as a Grass Roots league hope to encourage.
When you look at the teams who have disbanded in the last two decades, equivalent to nearly five divisions, we can still boast a league which caters for around 4000 local players.
Just to emphasise this I have listed here teams who have dropped out altogether since the turn of the century, although I have not listed teams I believe to have merged or changed names. so a trip down memory lane.
