Lyme bring curtain down with victory against Heavies
Beer Albion through to East Devon Senior final but time out so now held over until next season
The curtain came down on the local season after Lyme Regis lifted the Grandisson cup final for the first time ever with a 2-1 victory over Heavitree United Reserves at Ottery St Mary on wednesday evening. At the same time Beer Albion made it into the East Devon Senior cup final beating Alphington Res 3-2 at Topsham, but the final is being held over until the start of the 2018 19 season.
Sidmouth Town won the Morrison Bell cup at Ottery on tuesday 3-2 against fellow SWPL Budleigh Salterton. The vikings scored their three goals in the first ten minutes, before two late second half replies from the robins almost rescued the night. For the historians amongst you:
The robins and the vikings have dominated this competition since it first began in 1920 with Budleigh winning the trophy 21 times and Sidmouth winning it 13 times. Budleigh have also been beaten finalists 11 times which means they have been in 36 of the 85 finals ever. Sidmouth have lost six times in the final but overall they have 22 cup final appearances to their name.
Oddly enough Budleigh and Sidmouth have met in the final seven times before tonight, their last meeting was two years ago but the vikings have bragging rights as they lead 4-3, which is now 5-3.
Another point of interest is that in the 1975 final between the pair which Sidmouth won 3-0 a certain Mr Neil Anthony was one of the goalscorers.
History shows that 19 clubs have won or shared the trophy since it began and the numbers are listed below and include tonights outcome.
