A memorable blast from the past

Depree cup final 1928

You could not make this up but great history

However in 1928 Thorverton were set to face Starcross in the final of the Depree cup a competition for Division 3 teams which ran in the Exeter victory league for many years. The final was to be staged at Alphingtons ground at Aldens Farm which I believe has now been built on, but when the teams and officials turned up, the pitch was unplayable, grass knee high,  and could not be marked, and no goal nets so after a quick decision by the league and referee the teams and the 200 spectators had to make their way over to the Friars fc ground which I believe is now the Chronicles pitch.

Mr A W Sellick the Asst League Secretary who was at the final and the referee took the decision and kick off delayed just 35 minutes.

Report from the Express and echo records that Thorverton won 3-1 and the presentations were made by the East Devon League Secretary Mr R Blackmore

Just to add interest these were the Depree cup winners over the years and note Alphington won it in 1929.
