Villagers set to celebrate their centenary this month

Axmouth United football club are set to celebrate their centenary this month. The club were formed in early October 1922 at a meeting in the club room of the Ship hotel. The President and Vice Presidents elected were Misses Stevens and Leach of Stedcombe Manor, Joint secretarys R. Anning and S. Humphrey, Treasurer Mr Bowden-Smith, and committee A. Dixon, R. Morgan, F. Humphrey, E. Hoare and J. Real.
Committee member Mr Coles offered to provide the field to play on.
Axmouth played Colyton Res in their first ever match on Saturday October 21st but neither team could find the net. However Axmouth soon put that right it seems they beat Farway United 6-1 a few weeks later.
On Christmas Day the club organised a match between Singles and Married which the singles won 6-2. Perhaps the married men might want revenge this year 🏆⚽️ Boxing Day would be appropriate.
Then early in the New Year 1923 in fact on Jan 6th Axmouth adopted their colours of claret and amber for the first time against Axminster Town Res and it paid off with a 2-1 win. The club had to wait until the autumn of 1923 before they joined the Perry Street League where they spent most years until they joined the Exeter & District league for the first time in 1969.
