DEVON SENIOR CUP ITS COMING HOME
UNIVERSITY 3RDS V NEWTON ST CYRES
Devon Senior cup final 2023 at Newton Abbot saturday May 20
The Devon Senior cup will be heading back to the Stitch2Print Devon & Exeter League whoever wins at Coach Road Newton Abbot this coming saturday. Kingsteignton of the South Devon League are current holders but like beaten finalists Chudleigh Athletic stepped up to Premier status so are not involved.
This seasons two finalists are Exeter Universitys 3rd team and Newton St Cyres who have defied their league form to get this far.
For the college this is a first ever final although their Reserve team won the trophy six years ago, and on paper will start as favourites. Cyres on the other hand look in danger of finishing last in Division One and face possible relegation unless they can defeat the University 3rd team when the pair meet again on wednesday 23rd May just a few days after the final. How ironic is that ? In a way for them two cup finals !
As for saturdays final Newton St Cyres have a remarkable County cup record having won all three major trophies in their history. In 1973 they were Intermediate winners, in 1975 won the Senior cup and then in 1989 captured the Premier cup. It is a unique enviable record for the club when so many clubs have never ever played in a County cup final.
Route to the final for both teams:
