JUST THREE LEAGUE MATCHES SURVIVE THE WET WEATHER ON THE FINAL FEBRUARY SATURDAY

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 24

Just three matches dodged the weather on the final saturday of February and there have not been too many occasions when Uplyme and their Venlake ground top the charts. However with Premier and Divisions One, Two and Three all washed out, their Division Four game against Exeter University 4ths produced a tense 2-2 draw which for neither side was quite what they had hoped, as both are still in the running for a top three finish.

Ironically Division Five did not lose a game to the elements, there was only one fixture a mid table duel between Millwey Rise and the University 7ths and it was played and produced a thriller with teh Axminster team edging it 4-3.

The only other game to deny the weather was at the Exwick hub where a crowd of over 100, possibly a “world record” for Division Eight mused one of our on the spot League officials, but the game between the top two Alphington 3rds and leaders Heavitree Res did not end well for the latter. Second place Alphington won it 6-1 and their cause was made easier as Heavitree suffered two red cards. Victory trims the Heavies leadership back to a couple of points and with three matches in hand the title is Alphas to lose.

Elsewhere the rain scuppered not just the league programme but also six local cup ties so new dates will need to be found asap. The lack of action is also no preparation for those clubs who expect to see County cup semi final action this coming saturday, and there are two local cup ties on offer in midweek.
