DEVON SENIOR CUP ROUND UP
DEVON SENIOR CUP
Although our teams enjoyed a good day in saturdays second round ties we have to look back 21 years to the last time one of this seasons hopefuls won the cup and that was Kentisbeare in 2005. Kents made a good start this weekend with a 2-1 win at Ex Dons but the fourth division side were no pushover.
Willand Rovers Res won the cup in 2008 and the current Willand XI charged into the last 32 with a 7-2 victory against Tavistock Association.
Uplowman Athletic also charged through 5-0 against Coombe Martin from the North Devon League, and other successes against North Devon sides came at Alphington 4-0 against Northam Lions, and Newtown 1-0 against South Molton. However Braunton balanced the books a little winning 3-1 against Whipton & Pinhoe.
Beacon Knights are through after winning their penalty shoot out 5-3 against Paignton Villa, Clyst Valley routed Newton Abbot Spurs 7-1, Jason-Ryan 3, White 2, Burwood and Ware with the goals, Starcross Dons 3-2 at home to East Allington, and Tedburn St Mary through 2-0 against Paignton Saints with Saxton and Gibson-Heard getting one apiece.
More domestically Lympstone were too strong for Halwill winning 4-0, Royal Oak made short work of Tipton St John 6-1, Central away to Millwey Rise won 2-0, and Dunkeswell Rovers came from two down to shock Witheridge 4-3, Northcott 2, Pye and Powell scoring, Vittles the pick of the side.
There were penalty shoot outs at Broadclyst where Morchard Bishop won that 4-3 after a 3-3 draw, at Topsham where it finished 0-0 then 4-3 to the tops whose O’Donnell was their star man, and also Upottery against Dawlish 4-3 on pens to the Glebe Park team after a 3-3 draw.
Heavitree United won a good match at Feniton 1-0, Khaliq shining for the losers, but Axminster Town dipped out beaten 2-0 at Kingskerswell.
One tie played on friday evening saw Elmore knock out Newton St Cyres 4-0. The eagles won the trophy 50 years ago and were beaten finalists in 1988 and 1999 so will be looking to make it third time lucky.
