EXETER CITY CELEBRATE THEIR 125 YEARS EXISTENCE

We as the Stitch2print Devon & Exeter League would like to congratulate Exeter City football club on their 125 years anniversary but we also want to be acknowledged  for playing a big part of their story as it was with us they started! Sadly this did not get mentioned by the TV broadcast station, and many supporters and followers will probably assume City have always been in the National Football league. Not so!

After the merger of two local clubs Exeter City came into being in 1900 as St Sidwells United in the East Devon League our former name. As St Sidwells they won their first championships in Division Two in 1902 and 1903 then after winning that title at the end of the 1904 1905 season they changed their name to Exeter City and won their third title and first ever as Exeter City in Division One the equivalent of Premier today.

So three titles in the bag, City then joined the Plymouth & District League because it was felt to be stronger, for two seasons, 1905/06 and 1906/07 finishing 9th and 14th , and then the following year 1907/1908 joined the Southern League finishing 5th, and finally then joining the National Football League nearly a decade after their inception. 

A number of our League officials including myself have past links with City, so naturally we all want to celebrate with them. Long may they continue. Exeter needs a major football team.
